27th Annual Spirit of Santa breakfast to be held one day only

While in the past the local Spirit of Santa breakfast has been held on both the first Thursday and Friday of December, organizers wish to make the public aware that it will only be held on Friday, December 1 this year.

Organizers have already been hard at work on the Twenty-seventh Annual Spirit of Santa program to ensure that local children have the best possible Christmas. Spirit of Santa is a community-wide project that provides Christmas gifts for around 1,200 local youngsters each year.

Donations of new toys and clothing are accepted, then given to appropriate children. Monetary donations are also welcome. They are used to purchase gifts for any child who might not be “adopted,” to “fill in” for others, or for those whose adopters might not come through at all. Monetary donations may be mailed to: Spirit of Santa, 927 North Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, TN, 38464.

The primary fund-raising event is the Spirit of Santa Breakfast. During the breakfast people stop by to donate toys or money to the effort. This year’s breakfast will take place between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. on Friday, December 1st at the City of Lawrenceburg’s auditorium on East Gaines Street. If you wish to contribute to this program drop off donations during the breakfast or at the Lawrenceburg Parks and Recreation office located inside Rotary Park.

Director of Parks and Recreation Pam Kemp indicates that the deadline is fast approaching for those wishing to submit the name of a child for the program. Names of children up to age 12 are accepted. To apply, pick up a form at the local Department of Human Services office on Crews Street. Forms must be filled out completely, then returned to the DHS office by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2017.

Once names of children are submitted, people are encouraged to “adopt” a child, purchasing Christmas gifts for them. Clubs, churches, and other organizations are encouraged to adopt a family through the program. By adopting a family you are taking on the responsibility of providing for the Christmas needs of each family member. Kemp said that several names are already ready for adoption at this point.

All donations to Spirit of Santa need to be turned in at the Parks and Recreation department no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8th.

To find out more, or to inquire about adoption or volunteer opportunities, contact Parks and Recreation at 931-762-4231.
