Fraud Discovered Before Money Changes Hands
Lawrenceburg Now
An attempted fraud incident was halted Monday before any money changed hands when the suspicious victim began to track the source of some text messages she had been receiving.
The sixty-three year old victim, a resident of County Farm Road in Ethridge, notified Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies of the crime at around 10:30 a.m. She said that she had begun receiving text messages that appeared to be from AT&T. The first was to “thank her for going paperless on her contract with them.” The second was regarding her changing her email address.
The final text said, “Thank you for your purchase of the new iPhone 6S.” It explained that her first payment of $28.34 would be added to her bill the following month. Thereafter, she would be billed $59.50 per month for a period of thirty months. Altogether, the payments would amount to $1,813.34.
The victim reported that she had contacted AT&T and spoke with representatives in the company’s fraud department. They informed her that her account had been hacked. They told her that “AT&T would stand behind her on this matter,” and advised her to file a complaint with her local police agency. They also instructed her to forward a copy of the report to AT&T, then notify her bank as well as the Social Security Administration.
Due to the fact that no actual monetary transaction had been completed, the crime was classified as “identity theft” rather than “fraud.”
