Driver Reports Car Stolen After Sustaining Injuries In Crash
Lawrenceburg Now
Charges were brought against an Ethridge man who reported his vehicle had been stolen last week, after authorities found that the car had been wrecked and he had sustained injuries consistent with being involved in a crash.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to a Mt. Horeb Road home at around 8:40 that evening to investigate the stolen car claim. They found that the complainant, forty-three year old Joseph Edward Castell, was not at the location. While there, deputies report that Troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol arrived, looking for the same man. They indicated that Casteel’s Geo Metro car had been involved in a single-vehicle crash in the area of Rose Hill, and no one was found at the scene.
Central Dispatch reported that Castell had called to report the car stolen and said that he was walking to the Mt. Horeb Road location to meet with deputies. They learned that Castell was at a nearby home and quickly made their way to that location. Deputies received no answer to their repeated hails. They looked through a window and saw an unresponsive man lying on a bed with “obvious injuries to his head.” They continued to try to rouse the man, unsuccessfully, and feared that he was seriously injured.
After a time deputies were instructed to make entry and check the man’s condition. They had to pry open a door to gain access and found that the man had cuts across his forehead. When they loudly announced themselves, they report that Castell awakened. They reported, “You could tell either he was very intoxicated or the injury to his head was causing him to slur his speech.”
Members of the Emergency Medical Service evaluated Castell’s condition and found that he had glass in one of the cuts on his head and pieces of glass in his hair. Once he was medically cleared, field sobriety tests were administered and deputies report that he failed to perform satisfactorily. He was subsequently arrested on D.U.I. charges. At the time reports were filed additional charges were pending.
