December 5 Meet-And-Greet Planned In “Grand Opening” Of SLFD Station 2
Lawrenceburg Now
Members of Southeast Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department have planned a meet-and-greet event for the public in honor of the official opening of their newly-constructed Station #2.
Southeast Fire Department has the largest coverage area of any fire department in the county, covering areas that extend across the entire southern portion of Lawrence County. They service residents who live south of Loretto, from Five Points to St. Joseph.
Station 1, established in 1991, is located on Gillespie Lane in Five Points. Since the station was not as centrally located as would be ideal for the vast coverage area, members began working toward the goal of erecting a second station in the fall of last year. Construction got under way around April of this year. Land for the station, located at 15 St. Mary’s Road (off of Rascaltown Road) in the Liberty Grove community, was donated by Todd Gieske. The entire construction and outfitting of the second station was paid for with the proceeds of past fundraisers held by firefighters.
With an investment of around $30,000, the department has been able to construct the new facility and purchase a fire truck and other rescue equipment. The ranks of the fire department have been expanded to twenty-two. Five of those members were added specifically to man Station 2 and provide a lower response time for residents in the western portion of their coverage area.
Now that the facility is up and ready to go, members have planned the event to allow the public a chance to look around and become more familiar with the new station. The event will be held on Saturday, December 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. “We’ll be cooking up hotdogs for lunch,” said Assistant Chief Cody Johns. “We just want to make people aware that, if you live in that area, you now have support that’s closer to your house.”
Having the second station operational will help keep fire insurance costs to a minimum, hopefully resulting in some savings for those who live within the service area.
