Victim Fears Call About Computer Hack Was A Scam

Lawrenceburg Now

A local man filed a report with law enforcement officials last week, saying that he feared that he had been scammed out of money through an unsolicited phone call about his computer having been hacked.

The victim, age 61, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that he had received the call in September. The caller informed him that he was from the “Khetan Company” in San Diego, California, and convinced the victim that his Windows security system had been hacked. The caller convinced the victim to pay his company $387.35, indicating that they would then “restore the security system.”

The victim said that he agreed to pay the amount via telephone, but when he received his bank statement the charge was for $399.88. He told deputies that he had notified his bank that he had been scammed and canceled his bank card. He said that the caller had given him two telephone numbers to contact the company, but that he is unable to get an answer at either number.

The incident currently remains under investigation.
