Deputy Extinguishes Fire In Truck Bed And Arrests Intoxicated Driver

An alert deputy was able to extinguish a fire that was burning in the bed of a truck at a Lawrenceburg business Thursday, and then arrested the driver on D.U.I. charges.

Reports show that at around 5:30 p.m. the deputy had walked to the Quik Stop store situated adjacent to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department at 300 West Gaines Street. As he was walking back, the deputy reports that he noticed that a driver was backing a truck into a parking space while a fire was burning in the truck bed. The deputy ran to his patrol car and retrieved a fire extinguisher, then ran back and extinguished the blaze. Once the fire was out, the deputy reports that he noticed there was a charcoal grill, still burning, on the ground. He extinguished that, as well.

The deputy reports that the driver, thirty-eight year old Jeremy Scott Judkins of 314 Brannon Street, Lawrenceburg had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage about his person. An open bottle of liquor was found in the front seat of the truck. Judkins told the deputy that he “had taken a couple of shots four hours prior to driving.” Field sobriety tests were administered and Judkins reportedly performed poorly.

Judkins was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. At that time he told the deputy that he had sustained burns to his hands and right shoulder when he removed the grill from the back of his truck. He was transported to the hospital for medical treatment, then later taken to the Lawrence County Detention Center for incarceration.
