Tenant moves out leaving pets inside house
Lawrenceburg Now
Pets were found to be very malnourished after the tenant of a Summertown property moved out, leaving them trapped inside.
The owner the Durham Circle home summoned Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies there last weekend. She said that the woman who had rented the house had fallen behind on her rent and moved out approximately three months prior. She told deputies that she had come to the home to prepare it for a new tenant.
When she opened the back door, however, she said she found that floors in every room were covered in dog feces. She said it appeared to have been there for months. She said that a bedroom door was closed and it “sounded like there were one or more animals trapped inside the room.”
Deputies entered the home and found that, along with the dog feces, “the walls were damaged from what appeared to be the dogs chewing on them.”
Reports show that deputies opened one bedroom door and found a cat inside “that appeared to have been abandoned for some time.” Numerous cans of food had been placed on the floor. Deputies report that, “The cat had eaten all of the food and appeared to be very malnourished.” All of the animals were removed from the property.
The owner estimated it would cost $40,000 to repair the house. At the time reports were filed investigation into the matter was on-going.
