Residents Voice Objections To Recent Re-Zone
Lawrenceburg Now
A number of residents of a Lawrenceburg subdivision attended Thursday morning’s meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council to voice their objection to recent action to rezone nearby property.
During their October 22 meeting, council members held a final vote regarding the re-zoning of property located on the northern portion of Springer Road, near Crews Street, belonging to Clayton Wilson. The vote was to re-zone one of the properties from a Residential-4 designation to Commercial-3 general commercial district. The other property was re-zoned from a Residential-2 to Commercial-3 designation.
Both actions were taken on recommendation by the city’s Planning Board. The final vote was held only after the council had properly advertised the action and held a public hearing on the matter.
Thursday, residents of Massey Subdivision indicated that they had not known about the re-zoning plan until after it had been finalized. They said that the property is thought of as a “gateway to our neighborhood,” and indicated that they were concerned that actions might be taken that would de-value their properties, or that a commercial area might pose a hazard for children exiting school buses, etc. They said they would like for certain restrictions to be implemented. They said that signage indicates the property will be auctioned on Saturday (November 14), and said that they would speak with the owner about possible compromise.
Mayor Keith Durham emphasized that those concerned have a right to appeal the decision of the council. He also encouraged them to speak with the owner regarding their concerns.
