Grand Jury Action Yields Additional Charges In TBI Homicide Investigation
Lawrenceburg Now
Grand jury indictments have been handed down against a Summertown man accused in the August 26, 2015 murder of his ex-girlfriend, the night before the pair was scheduled to appear in a Lawrence County courtroom for a paternity hearing.
Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reported on August 27 that the investigation had been launched after twenty-five year old Britney Nicole Pigg failed to appear for the scheduled paternity hearing. Pigg was to appear in court along with ex-boyfriend Shane Vernon Shirley, age 23. When Pigg failed to appear, Twenty-first District Attorney General Kim Helper requested that TBI check into the wellbeing of Pigg and her six-month-old child. TBI was joined in the investigation by members of both the Lawrence and Lewis County Sheriff’s Departments.
While conducting the investigation, agents found Pigg’s body inside her car on property belonging to Shirley’s uncle, located on Drake Lane in Lewis County.
Authorities said that the investigation revealed that Pigg had met with Shirley at his home on Hannah Road in Summertown the evening of August 25. They said that the investigation “revealed Shirley as the individual responsible for Pigg’s death.”
Officials were able to locate the child, who was unharmed, at the home of an acquaintance of Shirley’s current girlfriend.
On Monday, TBI officials report that a Lewis County Grand Jury returned indictments against Shirley, charging him with the crimes of first degree murder, abuse of a corpse, filing a false police report, and tampering with evidence.
Shirley remains incarcerated at the Lewis County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
