Escaped Alabama Inmate Leads Authorities Into Lawrence County Before Being Apprehended

A Lauderdale County, Alabama Jail inmate who escaped from a work detail on Wednesday led authorities on a chase that ended when he crashed near Loretto.

Alabama authorities reported that Killen Alabama resident Aaron Heath Hamilton, age 41, had been incarcerated in Lauderdale County in connection with an escape incident that had occurred a few months prior. A trusty at the jail, Hamilton had been assigned to a work detail at the courthouse where the crew was performing maintenance work. While there, they report that Hamilton stole a county-owned 2003 Ford F-150 and fled.

Hamilton was free for only a few hours when a citizen called to report a sighting. Hamilton had been spotted at a gas station at the U.S. Highway 72/Highway 101 intersection in Elgin Crossroads.

When deputies approached, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton reported, Hamilton fled on Highway 101, heading toward Loretto. He led deputies on a twelve-mile chase, crossing the state line. At that point, he said Hamilton failed to negotiate a curve and crashed. He was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital with what was said to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities indicate that in July Hamilton, who was serving time due to a probation violation, was allowed a temporary release to look for employment. He failed to return to the work release center as ordered and was then charged with third degree escape.

Hamilton had been scheduled for release later in the week, however Singleton said that a new escape charge would be added upon his release from the hospital.
