Council votes to designate former West Gaines Street School as historic landmark
Lawrenceburg Now
Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council have given first approval to an ordinance that would rezone the old West Gaines Street School.
Committee members of a group with the goal of having the school designated as a historical landmark addressed the council during its regular bi-monthly business meeting Thursday morning.
At the request of the Historical Zoning Board, council members approved on first reading an ordinance that would rezone the property and include it in the city’s historic district.
The property belongs to the Lawrence County Board of Education and served as the board’s offices for a number of years.
The building was used to educate students of color prior to desegregation in 1964. The committee hopes that, in the future, the building might serve as a community center.
A public hearing and second reading of the ordinance has been scheduled to take place during the council’s Wednesday, November 23, 2016 meeting.
