Lawrenceburg Leaders Tweak Ordinance Governing Parking In The Vicinity Of Parrish Street
Lawrenceburg Now
Lawrenceburg leaders have again given initial approval to an ordinance to govern parking in the Parrish Street area, this time including Springer Drive.
Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council approved an ordinance on first reading in late August to prohibit parking of motor vehicles from Lafayette Avenue “for 800 feet east on Parrish to the bottom of the hill.” Before second and final reading was held, however, the matter was tabled to allow council members more time to consider the matter.
During the council’s bi-monthly business meeting Thursday morning members gave first approval to a re-drafted version of the ordinance. It is “to regulate and prohibit the parking of motor vehicles and other vehicles on Parrish Street and Springer Drive from Lafayette Avenue to East Gaines Street, with the exception of limited parking as stated.”
According to the ordinance, the streets, “create an impediment for vehicles and emergency vehicles when vehicles are parked on those streets,” and it is in the “best interest of the citizens” to prohibit parking in that area.
Lawrenceburg Mayor Keith Durham pointed out that the council held a work session and public meeting to gain input from residents in that area. “We think we’ve tailored it to meet their needs,” he explained.
The ordinance specifies that parking along the streets is prohibited overnight “or for a period longer than four hours during daylight hours (holidays and special events).” Under the ordinance, vehicles parked overnight or “for an extended time” may be towed at the owner’s expense and a citation issued. It specifies that, “A person found guilty of parking in the ‘No Parking’ zone shall be fined not more than allowed by State Law in addition to paying the expense for removal of said vehicle.”
The ordinance must be approved on second and final reading before becoming effective. Council members expect to hold a second reading during their next regularly-scheduled meeting on Thursday, November 12.
