Deployment And Return Of Lawrenceburg Fire Personnel From South Carolina
Press release
Members of the Lawrenceburg Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team and the Maury Hazardous Operation Team’s Water Rescue Team returned home late Monday night after assisting South Carolina’s residents from severe flooding previously described as a 1,000-year event.
The Lawrenceburg Fire Department’s swift water team which was led by Lieutenant Jeremy Johnson included team members Tyler McDow, Brian Green and Mack Crews. Members of the Maury County swift water team included Eric Hileman , Joey Norman, Jon Hardy, Cody Alexander, Nick Risner and Josh Periut.
The two local teams along with 70 other personnel from across the State of Tennessee arrived in Columbia, S.C. on Friday, Oct. 9. Once the teams were briefed they were divided into strike teams deployed to different areas across the State of South Carolina where the teams would receive their first assignments.
The members of the Lawrenceburg Water Rescue Team, and Maury County Water Rescue Team were combined into a larger task force with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency and the South Carolina National Guard. The two water rescue teams were tasked with providing victim rescue services and equipment, while the TWRA was also assigned victim rescue along with crew protection, and the South Carolina National Guard would provide vehicles for transport. The Task Force was deployed to Georgetown, SC, one of the hardest hit areas of the state.
Members spent the majority of their time in Georgetown carrying out a variety of tasks including emergency rescue of victims and animals. The team was also tasked with performing door to door welfare checks by boat to flooded areas that could not be reached by land. The Task Force worked around the clock, sometimes logging over 20 hours per day. In their down time the Task Force used the gymnasium of a local elementary school, and army field cots for their sleeping quarters. The task force affected more than 60 people who were rescued or assisted. Both local teams logged in more than 700 hours.During one operation, the group helped nine people escape from a National Guard truck that had keeled over in more than five-feet of water after the street beneath it had deteriorated.
