Store Clerk Seriously Injured When Beaten With Golf Club

A store clerk sustained serious injuries during the weekend when a market patron entered and attacked him with a golf club.

According to reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department officers arrived at North End Market around 7:40 p.m. to find the clerk injured, bleeding from the mouth.

The clerk told officers that his attacker, identified as forty-five year old Joey Tyrone Simpson of 434 Third Street, Lawrenceburg, had been in the store earlier in the day “wanting $100.” He told officers that he had felt threatened by Simpson, therefore he had given him some money “to help him out.” He said that, later, Simpson had returned and began to assault him.

The victim’s sister told officers that Simpson had entered the store and, without saying a word, walked behind the counter and began striking him with a golf club. She showed officers video surveillance of the entire event. Officers report that it showed Simpson pulling into the parking lot, exiting his truck and grabbing something from the back, then entering the business. It showed Simpson attacking the clerk, then leaving the store.

Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene to render aid and the clerk was transported to Southern Tennessee Regional Health Systems for further treatment. His injuries were said to be non-life threatening.

A warrant was obtained, charging Simpson with aggravated assault and officers made their way to Simpson’s home. They report finding the truck they had seen in the security video parked in the driveway. They found a golf club lying in the rear of the truck, atop some black garbage bags.

Officers made contact with Simpson and placed him under arrest. They report asking whether the golf club in the back of his truck was the one he used to assault the clerk, and that he admitted that it was. During transport, they report that he admitted taking the club into the store and striking the clerk. He allegedly told them that the clerk had yelled at him about an incident that had occurred earlier in the day and he had returned to “settle the matter”. He said that he had assaulted him because “he wanted his respect”.

Simpson was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center without bond. He was scheduled an initial appearance in General Sessions Court on November 6, 2015.
