City Of Loretto Plans Public Meeting To Seek Input On Sidewalk Project
Lawrenceburg Now
Officials with the City of Loretto have scheduled a public meeting in the hopes of obtaining public input regarding the construction of sidewalks throughout the Old Town portion of the city.
Loretto Mayor Jesse Turner said Thursday, “The city plans to apply for a Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) Grant through the Tennessee Department of Transportation to help fund the project. Transportation Alternatives are federally funded, community-based projects that expand travel choices and enhance the transportation experience by integrating modes of, and improving the cultural, historic, and environmental aspects of, our transportation infrastructure. TA projects must be one of ten eligible activities and must relate to surface transportation.”
Turner said that the engineering firm Goodwyn, Mills, & Cawood have been working with city officials in the development of the sidewalk plan. “Due to funding limitations the plan will be phased over several year,” he explained.
Under the first phase, the tentative plan is to include construction of sidewalks along Main Street, from Church Street to Commerce Street, as well as along a portion of Commerce Street from the Senior Citizens Center to the Loretto Public Library. Turner said the plan includes sidewalks and a streetscape that includes “trees and other plantings.”
“I’ve worked with municipalities in Northwest Alabama to obtain these grants and implement these projects and have seen the catalyst they can be for both new development and redevelopment,” Turner said. “Old Town Loretto is a unique area that has seen some recent redevelopment and has the potential for much more.
“So many of us here in Loretto have fond memories of the downtown area. As city officials, Ray Methvin, Steve McMasteres, and I have worked for the past year to find ways to revitalize this important part of our city. We’re excited to begin this first phase of a long term plan to re-grow our Old Town area.”
The public involvement meeting is scheduled to get underway at 5:00 p.m. at Loretto City Hall on Thursday, October 22, 2015. The city’s October business meeting will follow at 6:00 p.m.
