Purple pumpkins and more make this a great month
Finally, rain and cooler temperatures are making it truly feel like Fall. Even better, it’s starting to look like Fall, and I think our colors are as gorgeous as anybody’s, anywhere. In this part of the country we see a lot of orange and crimson year-round, but this is the only time of year we appreciate them equally.
Speaking of color, pumpkins – which I thought were always orange – come in an amazing range of shades these days! Thanks to The Shelter, Inc., that includes PURPLE. They’re selling purple pumpkins for $25 each as a fundraiser during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You can get yours at The Shelter office (317 Geri St., Lawrenceburg) or Dunkin’s Market.
Pumpkins are also a tool for change in downtown Lawrenceburg this month. “POSITIVITY PUMPKINS” is a wonderful campaign – you’re invited to decorate a pumpkin and include a (written or painted) positive thought, word, prayer, or idea for downtown, and place it next to the Mexican War Monument on the square. If you’re into social media, you can post a photo with #LawCoPumpkinProject.
“In a world full of hate and negativity, let’s put our focus on sharing love and positivity! And beautify downtown,” says the Main Street Lawrenceburg Facebook post. What a great idea!
The Shelter, Inc. is sponsoring this month’s SECOND SATURDAYS event downtown, coming up this weekend, October 12. All vendor fees will go to The Shelter, as will registration fees for the 6:00-7:30 p.m. Paint it Purple Glow Run, 5K, and Fun Run. Registration forms can be printed from Facebook.
Other Second Saturday events on the Square begin at 5 p.m. and include a “Find Davy” scavenger hunt, a “dueling pianos” show by Rock & Roll Pianos, and more music from performers Raleigh Keegan, and Max King.
This Saturday is also a busy day for my friends in Loretto, who are continuing the 31st annual month-long salute to their German heritage. Several businesses throughout Loretto are joining in the OKTOBERFEST fun by offering sidewalk sales, kids’ activities, giveaways, and food trucks. Other events include tours of the Ralph J. Passarella Museum, the annual Weiner Dog Race at 2 p.m. and free pumpkins for kids at the Loretto Farmers Market in M.H. Weathers Park.
Fundraising events for The Shelter, Inc. continue October 17 with the PARtner GOLF TOURNAMENT sponsored by Heritage Automotive at the Lawrenceburg Golf & Country Club. Golfers tee off at 1 p.m.; for more information call The Shelter office at 762-1115.
The Center of Hope, another agency serving domestic violence victims in this area, will be DELIVERING TREATS to our police and first responders October 14-18. Since they’re headquartered in Maury County, events there include a candlelight vigil at Columbia’s First Presbyterian Church October 22, and the annual Boo Bash at the Memorial Building, 308 West 7th Street, on October 26.
Finally, mark your calendar for Main Street Lawrenceburg’s SPOOK AROUND DOWNTOWN set for Friday, October 25. This very successful event is in its third year, and invites kids in costume to come to the Square from 5 to 8 p.m. for trick-or-treating with downtown businesses and community organizations. Highlights are a costume contest that begins at 5 p.m., and carved (and lighted) pumpkin contest at 7:00. Both have divisions for children and 18+, but all entries must be kid-friendly. At 8 p.m., join local historian Clint Alley for a Spooky Story Walk which is recommended for ages 8 and up. Admission is just $1.
