Sheriff Brown Warns of Jury Duty Scam
Sheriff Jimmy Brown would like to warn the citizens of Lawrence County of a new scam going around involving jury duty. Victims are getting calls from a supposed law enforcement officer demanding payment for failing to appear for jury duty.
The caller may demand payment in one of a variety of ways: wire transfer, Green Dot MoneyPak or iTunes gift cards. Brown says that the victims purchase the cash cards, they are advised to call the imposters back to provide them with the numbers on the back of the card, allowing the scammers to access the money immediately.
And to verify he’s called the correct violator, the con asks to confirm your identity by soliciting personal information, including your name, birthdate and Social Security number.
Sheriff Brown says that real jury notices were recently sent out in Lawrence County, which is adding to the confusion among many citizens. Brown urges citizens to follow some simple steps to avoid becoming a scam victim:
• Don’t be pressured. If you get a call from someone asking for money, financial/personal information or using aggressive tactics, hang up. Authentic jury duty notifications are almost always delivered by mail.
• Be aware of spoofed calls. This is becoming a common thread with many scams. Cons can manipulate software to disguise how they appear on your caller ID. While calls might appear to be from the courthouse or police station, don’t be fooled by this type of intimidation. Call the courthouse phone number and don’t rely on caller-provided numbers. The Lawrence County Courthouse can be reached by calling 766-4100.
• Guard your personal information. Giving out sensitive personal or financial information to an unsolicited call is never something you should do. Guard this information to the fullest!
• Never wire money. Legitimate law enforcement will not demand payment immediately via wire transfer or prepaid card. If you are asked for money this way, know it can be as untraceable as cash.
If you happen to get one of these scam calls and would like to make an incident report, Brown says citizens can call Central Dispatch at 762-0450.
