Tennessee Highway Patrol Selected As Lead Agency In National Pilot Program
Press release
Colonel Tracy Trott of the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) announces that the THP has been selected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a partnering agency to conduct an occupant safety enforcement pilot program. This program has the potential to be demonstrated as a best practice to enhance the awareness of occupant safety nationally.
The THP has identified two counties where fatal crashes have increased due to lack of seatbelt use. One of those counties is Bedford County, located in the THP Lawrenceburg District. The THP has reached out to all law enforcement agencies in Bedford County to request their participation in a yearlong pilot program. The program kicks off October 1, 2015 and concludes September 30, 2016. The THP will capture pertinent occupant protection data including seat belts, child restraint devices and motorcycle helmets from all participating agencies. This information will be combined with the THP’s data and submitted monthly to NHTSA.
This will enable the THP to provide NHTSA with the most accurate and timely data to develop counter enforcement measures. Under Gov. Bill Haslam’s administration, the THP has have made seat belt enforcement one of its top priorities. The THP has increased seatbelt enforcement by 241.8 percent compared to 2010. Year to date, 48 percent of all traffic fatalities in Tennessee were unrestrained motorists, compared to 54 percent in 2010. However, the job is not done. The THP must continue to enforce the law and create awareness about the importance of wearing safety restraints.
