Police Chief Urges Caution After Series Of Vehicle Burglaries
Lawenceburg Now
Local law enforcement officers have investigated numerous automobile burglaries in the past few weeks prompting Lawrenceburg Police Chief Judy Moore to warn residents against leaving items inside their vehicles.
Lawrenceburg Police officers were called upon to investigate several “smash and grab” type vehicle burglaries on Friday alone. Before 8:30 a.m. officers had answered calls to homes on Fisher Alley, Second Avenue, Berger Street, and First Street.
Just after 7:00 a.m. officers spoke with a First Street resident who reported a window broken out of her 2006 Pontiac Grand Am. Missing were her purse and its contents. Her son reported he had heard a loud noise at around 2:00 a.m. Later that morning the victim’s wallet and some loose change were found lying on the ground at the southwest corner of Seventh Street and Second Avenue. The victim estimated loss and damages at $760.
At a home on Second Avenue, a woman reported a busted window on her 2005 Volkswagen Jetta. She told police officers that her purse containing various items had been stolen, leaving her with an approximate $181 loss.
At a Berger Street home the resident reported that someone had smashed a window on her 2006 Nissan Murano, making off with $21 that she had left lying in plain sight on the middle console. Loss and damages totaled approximately $521.
Officers then made their way to Fisher Alley where they spoke with two separate victims. At one home, the victim reported a window broken out of her 2005 Toyota Sequoia. The only item missing appeared to be her lunchbox. She estimated loss to be $525. Her neighbor said that after breaking a window on his 2008 Dodge Caliber, thieves made off with a purse and contents belonging to another resident. Loss there was around $550.
Moore urges resident to exercise caution anytime you leave your vehicle unattended. Some tips regarding auto burglary safety include:
*If possible park in a busy, well-lit area.
*Always roll up windows and lock all doors.
*Never leave your keys in your vehicle.
*Activate your security system if you have one.
*Never leave valuables inside your vehicle.
*Don’t leave items lying in plain view.
*Consider (legal) window tinting – this will make it more obvious when someone is trying to look inside.
*Take care when transferring items to your trunk. Thieves often stake out parking lots and take note when you move valuables into the trunk. A better plan is to move items to the truck ahead of time – even if it means making an extra stop.
*Stay on the alert.
*Trust your instincts – don’t park in an area if you don’t feel entirely secure.
*NEVER confront anyone by yourself. Notify police officials as quickly as possible.
