Series of vandalisms threatens safety of train tracks
Lawrenceburg Now
Authorities are investigating a series of vandalism incidents to railroad tracks and equipment in the area that pose a safety hazard to both train operators and motorists.
Officials with Tennessee Southern Railroad Company contacted Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies recently about the latest vandalism. They said that this was the fourth in a series of incidents occurring within the past few months in Lawrence County.
They reported that an engineer was transporting cargo from Nashville to Florence, AL when he noticed that a spike had been driven between the rails at a track switch location. Railroad officials said the track had been inspected only 16 ½ hours before the discovery was made. They told deputies that "this type of vandalism could result in a derailed train.
Police officers recently responded to a separate incident where someone had tampered with the boxes that house controls for signals and arms at a railroad crossing inside the City of Lawrenceburg, rendering it inoperable.
At the present time authorities are continuing to investigate the incidents. Anyone with information about the crimes should contact the sheriff's department at 931-762-3626.
