Authorities investigate stolen Social Security benefits
Lawrenceburg Now
A police investigation was initiated last week when a Goodsprings resident reported that an acquaintance had stolen her Social Security benefits while she was incarcerated.
The victim, age 27, reported to Lawrenceburg Police officers that she had been arrested during a visit to the probation office and that she was not allowed to retrieve her belongings from the car of the woman who had given her a ride. She said that she had been incarcerated in Giles County and that the suspect, a twenty-nine year old Lawrenceburg resident, had possession of her belongings, including her bank card.
Once she was released from jail, the victim said that she received a letter from the Social Security Administration informing her that she would have to repay the $1,740.74 in benefits that had been deposited into her bank account during her incarceration. She told officers that she had learned that the suspect had stolen her debit card, had the PIN number changed, then used it to make purchases for the entire amount.
At the time reports were filed an investigation into the matter was underway.
