Convicted felon found to be in possession of stolen firearm
Lawrenceburg Now
A local man was arrested last week after police officers discovered he was a convicted felon in possession of a stolen firearm.
The matter came to light in the wake of a traffic stop made in the vicinity of the Springer/Weakley Creek Road intersection. An officer with the Lawrenceburg Police Department reports seeing forty-year-old Benjamin Wesley Wayne of 8 Five Points Road, Loretto, driving along Springer Road. Having knowledge that Wayne’s driver’s license had been revoked, the officer began to follow, at which time he noticed that the license plate was expired.
The reporting officer notes that after he made the stop and approached the vehicle he could see two methamphetamine torches lying on the front seat, He also noted that Wayne was “shaking uncontrollably.” Wayne reportedly told the officer that he had a gun inside the vehicle and that he was a convicted felon.
The officer retrieved a HiPoint .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun that was loaded with seven rounds, from a plastic box behind the driver’s seat. The torches and handgun were seized into evidence along with several plastic baggies found inside the vehicle.
Wayne was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a revoked license, and violation of the registration law. He was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center and incarcerated under a bond of $24,000.
The following day, reports show that detectives were able to confirm that the handgun had been reported as stolen. An additional warrant was obtained against Wayne at that point, charging him with theft of property.
