Waynesboro Pair Caught Returning Shoplifted Merchandise For Refund
Lawrenceburg Now.com
A Waynesboro couple was arrested last week after authorities determined that they had repeatedly returned shoplifted merchandise to the service desk at a Lawrenceburg business to obtain refunds.
Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that the assistance of officers was requested by the Asset Protection Manager at Walmart Thursday morning. He told officers that the man and woman had been in the store for several hours. During that time, he said the couple had repeatedly taken merchandise items from the shelves “opening it to make it appear as if their merchandise had been purchased and used,” then taken it to the service desk, seeking a refund.
The report indicates, “Because no receipt was available the cashier would give them store credit on a Walmart gift card that could be used throughout the store.” Store officials reported that one person would take the merchandise from the shelf, then the other would seek a refund. The items included a DVD recorder, rotary tool, electronics items, clothing, and consumable goods valued at around $750.
Reports show that other items were stolen by the couple, as well. If you are reading this story on facebook, then it has been copied without the permission of Lawrenceburg Now. These items, officials said, were bagged in white plastic Walmart bags and taken outside to the couple’s vehicle.
Officers made contact with the couple around 11:30 as they were attempting to leave the parking lot. They were confronted and detained for further investigation. Neither, reports show, admitted to committing a crime.
During the investigation officers discovered that an active order of protection issued through Wayne County was in place, dictating that the pair have no contact with one another.
As a result of the incident Raymond Herschel Long, 58, of 825 Bundarant Street, Waynesboro was arrested on charges of shoplifting over $500 and violation of an order of protection. The woman, Hollie Belynn McCrory, age 38, of 870 Hog Creek Road, Waynesboro, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting over $500. During a search subsequent to arrest, officers found that McCrory was in illegally possession of Xanax and Soma pills. She was additionally charged with illegal possession of Schedule IV narcotics.
Long was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center under a bond of $20,000 while bond for McCrory was set at $11,000. Both were scheduled an initial appearance in General Sessions Court on October 2, 2015.
