Stay alert to bus loading and unloading near Coffman Middle School
Motorists are being reminded to stay alert to the loading and unloading of buses in the vicinity of Coffman Middle School on Lafayette Avenue.
The traffic pattern near the school was changed completely at the beginning of the school year, and the front area along Lafayette Avenue is being used exclusively for the loading and unloading of school buses in the mornings and afternoons.
While motorists have had no trouble adhering to the new “no parking” policy, Lawrenceburg Police officials indicate that there is a continued problem with motorists who are not stopping when signaled to do so by bus drivers.
Under state law, all motorists are required to stop any time a school bus has its stop sign displayed and lights flashing. This signifies that students are loading or unloading. Since the buses have been parking in front of the school, officials say that many motorists are failing to stop as required.
They are warning the public that officers will be issuing traffic citations to those who fail to stop under these circumstances. The local fine for this type of citation is $145.
