Wayne Medical Center launches new volunteer program
Patients and visitors may hear the sound of music in the facility’s hallways during their next visit to Wayne Medical Center (WMC). A talented local musician recently became the first member of the hospital’s new volunteer program.
WMC has launched a new volunteer program providing an outlet for members of the community to make a difference in the lives of patients and visitors. According to CEO Teresa Grimmett, volunteer opportunities are available in several areas, including greeting patients and assisting visitors with finding their way through the facility as well as sharing musical talents.
Carty Bledsoe joined the volunteer program to provide music therapy to patients, visitors and staff members at WMC.
Bledsoe, a resident of Collinwood, is a violinist who performs with the Spring Hill Orchestra. She has played the violin for much of her life and enjoys playing old time fiddle tunes, standards and classical pieces. She was introduced to the idea of volunteering by a fellow orchestra member who invited Bledsoe to join her in playing for patients at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, where music therapy has been offered for several years. “I had so much fun, and the patients, visitors and staff all seemed to enjoy the music so much,” Bledsoe said.
When she learned of an opportunity to share her musical talent close to home at Wayne Medical Center, she was eager to help. “I like to think my music could lighten the spirits of people who are dealing with difficult health issues at the hospital and I like playing without payment, just for the joy of sharing music,” Bledsoe said.
In a hospital setting, music therapy is designed to provide soothing music to patients and visitors to help ease stress and anxiety. The WMC volunteer program—including music therapy and other roles—will be modeled after the volunteer program at Maury Regional Medical Center, where more than 400 community members donate their time to provide assistance to patients, visitors and staff members.
Community members interested in becoming a volunteer at WMC or learning more about available opportunities are encouraged to call 931.722.2021 for more information.
