Deputies rescue youngster being held at knifepoint by brother
Lawrenceburg Now
Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies who responded to a call in Summertown, just over the Lewis County line, Wednesday morning were able to rescue a child who was being held at knifepoint by his brother inside their Holloway Street home.
Local deputies were dispatched to the home at around 7:00 a.m. along with deputies from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department. Lawrence County deputies were the first to arrive on the scene and they quickly assessed the situation, finding that thirty-one year old resident Daniel Floyd Cates had barricaded himself inside of a bedroom earlier. Witnesses reported that he repeatedly told those present that someone was trying to kill him.
Cates’ mother and brother, age eleven, made several attempts to calm him. They told authorities that he had first threatened to throw his brother’s television out of a window.
The eleven year old walked around the house at which point authorities report that Cates reached through the window and dragged him inside. When the mother walked to that spot, she said she could see that Cates was holding a knife to his brother’s throat. He allegedly made threats to kill him if police officers were called to the scene.
Local deputies were able to distract Cates and rescue the boy. They report that the child sustained some non-life threatening injuries during the incident.
Cates was placed under arrest by Lewis County deputies and transported to the Lewis County Jail. He was booked under charges that include aggravated domestic assault, child endangerment, especially aggravated kidnapping, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Bond was set at $60,000.
