Authorities Suspect Monday Fire Is Arson
Authorities suspect that a fire that consumed a Self Road home Monday afternoon was an instance of arson.
Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that emergency personnel were initially called to the scene of what was described as a “grass fire” at 148 Self Road.
Once on-scene, however, they determined that the blaze had originated at a mobile home that had been completely destroyed. At the time of the fire the home was unoccupied and there was no power. They said that the resident had recently moved into a nursing home.
Deputies noted in their report that, although “power was absent from the box on the power pole, the box still contained the lock from the utility company.”
Firefighters reported that they “had to pull two propane tanks from inside the residence and threw them into the nearby weeds so they would not explode.” They noted that a valve on one of the tanks was open.
The victim’s brother reported that he had been riding an ATV earlier, checking his cornfield when he discovered the fire.
The victim’s daughter arrived on the scene and told deputies that she had been to the home that morning to retrieve some of her belongings and that “everything seemed normal to her.”
Department detectives are continuing to investigate the matter.
