Resident’s money stolen through establishment of online bank account
Lawrenceburg Now
Authorities were asked to investigate Tuesday after a Lawrenceburg man discovered that someone had stolen money from his bank account by establishing an online account in his name.
The victim, age seventy-five, filed a complaint with officers of the Lawrenceburg Police Department. He told officers that he had discovered that someone had used his name, social security number, and address to open a new checking account at his current bank. He said that once the account was established using his personal information, the person had been able to gain access to his savings account and transferred $500 into the new account.
In a separate incident, a Frank Street resident filed a complaint indicating that he had sustained a considerable loss due to a stolen credit card. The victim reported that his Direct Express credit card had gone missing while he was visiting an acquaintance on June 30th. He told officers that when he recently checked his account, he found that $800 had been withdrawn without his knowledge.
At the present time both incidents remain under investigation through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
