Lawrence County Native Selected For 2015-2016 SCORE Tennessee Educator Fellowship
Lawrence County native Samantha Roloff Massey is one of twenty-six educators across the state selected as a Fellow in the 2015-2016 Tennessee Educator Fellowship.
The daughter of Bob and Lana Roloff, Massey is a 2002 graduate of Lawrence County High School and Freed-Hardeman University, and is currently in the M.Ed. program at the University of Tennessee. She is a ninth-grade English language arts teacher at West High School in Knox County. In a recent interview she explained, “I had a couple of effective teachers in high school who really put students first. They inspired me to want to teach students and help them prepare for life after high school. It was these teachers who helped me look past myself as a child and see myself as a community member. I have always wanted to do the same thing for students.”
An independent, nonprofit, and non-partisan advocacy and research institution, founded by Senator Bill Frist, M.D., former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) collaboratively supports Tennessee’s work to prepare students for college and the workforce.
The organization works collaboratively to support reform efforts throughout Tennessee. Success is measured by the academic growth of Tennessee’s students, and the work is governed by a theory of change that includes embracing high academic standards, cultivating great school and district leaders, ensuring excellent teaching in every classroom, and using data to enhance student learning.
The new class of the Tennessee Educator Fellowship includes teachers with more than 300 years of combined teaching experience. These Educator Fellows represent elementary, middle, and high schools in urban, suburban, and rural systems across East, Middle, and West Tennessee. The members of the cohort teach math, English, science, social studies, history, government, engineering and robotics, music, and junior ROTC.
“I am so excited to be a SCORE Tennessee Educator Fellow this year,” Massey said. “It will allow me to learn more about the policies that impact my students and teachers like me. I hlpe to bring a deeper understanding of these policies to my fellow teachers.”
