People posing as firemen fraudulently collect money from Amish families
Lawrenceburg Now
An investigation was initiated late last week after persons posing as members of the Ethridge Fire Department fraudulently collected money from families in the Amish community.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department spoke with a fire department official who reported the crimes. He said that he had been contacted by several Amish families about the incidents, and that the department was not involved in any fundraising activities at that time.
The victims reported that two young men had approached them, claiming to represent the fire department. They asked for donations for the department, saying that they could only accept cash, not checks.
The crimes were perpetrated at homes on Convent Road, Jap Lane and South Brace Road in the Ethridge area.
The pair was described as one white male and one bi-racial male, one wearing an immobilizer boot on one foot. They were traveling in a small Kia SUV, gray or brown in color, with the words "VOL FIRE" across the rear bumper.
The fire department official told deputies that they do wish to pursue prosecution against those responsible.
