Brother of former commissioner accused of theft is indicted on perjury charge
Authorities indicate that the brother of former Lawrence County Commissioner Jeffrey Hughes has been indicted for allegedly perjuring himself during a bond hearing.
A press release issued by District Attorney General Brent Cooper indicates that Patrick Hughes, age 32, was arrested Thursday on one count of aggravated perjury.
Jeffrey Hughes, who formerly represented District 15 on the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners, submitted his resignation in March after an investigation was initiated into allegations that he had embezzled some $265,000 from local fire departments for whom he served as treasurer. A Lawrence County Grand Jury returned indictments against him in April, charging him with one count of theft over $250,000, one count of theft over $10,000, and 136 counts of forgery.
A grand jury indictment was issued against Patrick Hughes in connection with testimony he gave during his brother’s bail hearing in May. He was processed on the charge at the Lawrence County Detention Center, then released under a bond of $10,000.
