Caller uses IRS ruse to obtain personal information
Lawrenceburg Now
A Lawrenceburg man filed a complaint with local authorities last week after he discovered that a call from a man who identified himself as an IRS agent, was actually a scam.
The forty-three year old resident of Gallaher Street reported the matter to officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department. Reports show that the victim had received a call from a man who spoke with an accent, claiming that he represented the Internal Revenue Service. The caller informed the victim that he needed all of his personal information “for IRS purposes on his taxes.”
The victim told officers that while he was speaking with the man, his wife walked into the house and asked about the call. He said that she immediately took the phone from him and informed the caller that “she knew that it was a scam and not to call back.”
The victim told officers that he had already given the caller his personal information prior to the call being terminated. He said that he wanted the incident documented in the event of future identity theft.
Calls from individuals purporting to represent the IRS has become a common ruse and authorities warn residents never to give personal information over the phone or internet.
