Resident is swindled out of more than $1,000 in scam

Lawrenceburg Now

A local woman filed a complaint with law enforcement officers on Monday, indicating that she had been conned out of more than $1,000 in an apparent scam.

She explained to officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department that she had been contacted by a person who told her “she had been selected” to receive grant funds. Before she could obtain the money, however, the caller said that she would be required to load $250 onto an iTunes gift card, then contact him and give him the card information.

The victim said that she did as instructed, but that she was contacted twice more with similar instructions. She said that on both occasions, the individual instructed her to load $500 onto an iTunes gift card and call with the card information.

The victim said that she complied on these two occasions, as well, altogether being swindled out of $1,250. She told officers that when she was contacted for the fourth time, she realized that she had been targeted in a scam and subsequently stopped by the police department to file a complaint.

Investigation into the crime is on-going at the present time.
