Church Youth Leader Arrested For Inappropriate Relationship With A Minor
A youth leader at an Ethridge church was arrested Wednesday on charges that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a minor child while at church camp.
According to a press release issued through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, Ryan Christopher Matthews, age 36, of 31 Mavis Drive, Ethridge, was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center on charges of sexual battery by an authority figure and exploitation of a minor by electronic means. Additional charges are anticipated.
Detectives initiated an investigation against Matthews, who served as youth leader and song leader at Freedom Hill Bible Methodist Church in Ethridge, on June 18, 2015 after allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a minor child came to light. Detectives were contacted by Knoxville authorities who said they had received information about the crime. Local detectives worked with investigators with the Knoxville department of Children’s Services, gathering information.
Matthews was formally charged at the sheriff’s department on Wednesday. He was jailed under a bond of $500,000.
Detectives urge residents, “Anyone with information regarding this relationship, or if you suspect Matthews of other inappropriate relationships with other minor children,” contact the sheriff’s department at 931-762-3626, or the Criminal Investigation Division directly at 931-762-1608.
