Victim’s Social Security check diverted in IRS scam

Lawrenceburg Now

A local resident requested investigation by law enforcement officials last week after discovering that payment of her Social Security benefits had been diverted in what appeared to be a scam.

The seventy-six year old resident of Ada Avenue requested the investigation through the Lawrenceburg Police Department on Thursday. She said that in April she had received a call from a person claiming to work for the IRS. The caller had asked for, and received, her personal, identifying information.

The victim told officers that she had failed to receive her Social Security payment in May and had subsequently contacted bank officials. She learned that someone had fraudulently used her information to change the routing location of her benefits.

At the present time authorities are continuing to investigate the crime.
