Stolen Columbia check cashed in Lawrenceburg
Lawrenceburg Now
A Columbia resident filed a complaint with local law enforcement officials last week after she discovered that at least one of the checks stolen from her had been cashed at a bank in Lawrenceburg.
The nineteen year old victim reported to Lawrenceburg Police officers that she had recently filed a complaint with the Columbia Police Department after some of her personal checks went missing during a visit with some acquaintances.
She soon found that her signature had been forged on some of the checks and they were subsequently cashed. She said that since at least one of the forged checks had been cashed locally, Columbia officers advised her to report the matter to Lawrenceburg officers, as well.
The victim said that altogether, checks had been forged that resulted in a $728 loss from her bank account. The check cashed in Lawrenceburg, she said, was for the amount of $398.52. She told officers that she had obtained the name of the man who had cashed the check and was able to contact him via Facebook.
He gave her the name of a female with whom she was acquainted, and said that she had written the check to him for “some work he had done for her.” The check had been stolen on May 12 and was forged and cashed the following day.
Investigation into the crime is on-going at the present time. Anyone with relevant information should contact the police department at 931-762-2276.
