Maintenance man discovers card skimmer on gas pump

A maintenance man working at a local market Friday contacted law enforcement officials after he found what appeared to be a card skimmer attached to a gas pump.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department responded to Big Oak Market on Rabbit Trail Road around 4:00 p.m. The worker explained that he had been doing maintenance work that required him to open the door where the card reader is located. When he did, he said he found a foreign device that appeared to be a card skimmer.

The worker explained that the oil company had dispatched personnel to conduct a security check at the location earlier that same day. He said when he opened the machine the security seal had still been intact. No devices were found on the remaining gas pumps.

The reporting deputy noted that the gas pump targeted was positioned the farthest away from security cameras, facing away from them.

The device was taken into evidence and the matter currently remains under investigation.
