Victim of scam says caller began making threats
Lawrenceburg Now
A Lawrenceburg woman filed a complaint with law enforcement officers last week indicating that, even though she had paid him thousands of dollars, a scam artist had begun to threaten her life.
The victim, age forty-two, spoke with officers of the Lawrenceburg Police Department, indicating that she had been communicating with the man for around five months.
She said that he had first contacted her on January 20 when he claimed to be with the Better Business Bureau and Publishers Clearing House. He told the victim that she had won a grand prize and that, in order claim her prize, all she had to do was “to send a little bit of money.”
The victim told officers that she sent the requested money, but that she never received her prize. She said that she paid the man a total of $42,000.
The victim reported that the man continued to contact her, asking for more money. She said that when she refused, he began to make threats to harm both herself and her family members. The reporting officer was able to listen to voice messages left by the scammer that corroborated her claims.
Reports show that while the officer was taking information for the police report, the man called the victim once again. The officer spoke with him, but was unsuccessful in gaining any information. He instructed the man to “stop calling immediately,” however he reports that he man called back two additional times while he was speaking with the victim.
The officer suggested ways that the victim might put an end to the calls. At the current time the matter remains under investigation.
