Man busted for drugs and theft at Saturday softball tournament

The actions of an alert off duty law enforcement officer led to the arrest of a local man on theft and drug charges at a girls’ softball tournament during the weekend.

Officials with the Ethridge Police Department indicate that the incident occurred around 1:30 Saturday afternoon at Ethridge City Ball Park. An off-duty Lawrence County Corrections Officer noticed that a man had taken money from a table that was being used to sell items in a fundraising effort for one of the ball teams.

The corrections officer notified officers with the Ethridge Police Department and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and they were able to make contact with the man as he attempted to leave the ballpark.

During a search, officers found that the man, identified as James Christopher Dickey, was in possession of $11.00 along with two pills determined to be Lortabs, and a short piece of a plastic straw commonly associated with the use illicit drugs.

Dickey was arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked under charges that include theft of property, illegal possession of Schedule III narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was subsequently incarcerated under a bond of $3,000.
