City Of Loretto Partners With State Of Tennessee To Build Model Municipal Pool Facility
Municipal pool will feature environmental sustainability elements in construction and mechanical systems
Press release
The City of Loretto and the State of Tennessee reached agreement on their partnership to fund and construct a state-of-the-art municipal swim facility for Loretto.
Mayor Jesse Turner announced the partnership, in which the state and the city will join to fund the $750,000 project, and thanked the State of Tennessee for taking a proactive role in making the pool a reality. Turner added, “with the state’s lead and guidance, our city is about to build a facility that will serve all of our residents, young and old, for many years to come. This facility will be a source of recreation and pride for our town, and a model facility for the State of Tennessee as well.”
Lori Munkeboe, Director of the Office of Sustainable Practices, added, “We could not be happier with the splash that the new City of Loretto pool will make. We are excited to be part of a state of the art municipal pool including high-efficiency pumps and mechanical systems, concrete comprised of fly-ash, rainwater catchment, and – more than anything – a sustainable place to play.” Munkeboe agreed that the State plans to feature the city pool as a model for other sustainable construction throughout the state.
Engineering firm Croy Engineering, Huntsville, AL, is managing the design and construction of the pool. Croy Regional Manager, Andy Somers, pointed out, “It is rare to get an opportunity in an area the size of Loretto to undertake an innovative and daring project. We are excited to assist the City in making the best use of the funding available to develop a facility that best meets the needs of its citizens, is environmentally sustainable, and serves the community for years to come.”
Somers explained some of the innovations and their impact. “The site design includes construction techniques and materials that minimize the project impact on both the front end and during the life of the pool. In addition to the efficient pumps and filters, recycled construction materials, the pool will also include a bathhouse that uses daylighting and open air design to reduce the electrical demands of lighting and HVAC systems.”
Mayor Turner added that the pool will offer so much for so many users. “The pool will have ADA entries for those with physical disabilities. A section of the pool will be regulation length for swim practice and club swim meets. The pool will have play areas for infants and toddlers, along with areas suitable for low impact water aerobics. And best of all, the facility will include a high-efficiency pool heater that could extend the pool season to almost seven months of operation during the year.”
Pool conceptual design is to be finalized by July, with construction set to start in the fall. The facility plans to open by Memorial Day weekend 2016.
