Columbia man arrested when he is unable to pay cab fare
Lawrenceburg Now
A Columbia man was taken into custody by local law enforcement officers in the early hours Thursday after he was unable to pay a Nashville cab driver for his services.
Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department spoke with the forty-six year old cab driver, identified as Nashville resident Mafuz Kestay, at a North Locust Avenue address. He reported that he had left the Nashville Airport at around 10:00 p.m. and drove to Columbia, arriving at around 11:00 p.m. He said that he then agreed to drive twenty-seven year old Cavoris Dashay Abernathy of Woodland Street, Columbia, to Lawrenceburg. He said that when they arrived at their destination he informed Abernathy that he owed $76, but that Abernathy did not have the money to pay the fare.
The officer reports that Abernathy claimed he was trying to call his mother and sister, attempting to get them to come to the address and bring him money for the fare, but that neither showed up. The officer noted, “I gave him multiple chances and more than an hour to get the money but he kept lying and he had no intentions of paying the money he owed the cab driver.
Abernathy was arrested on a charge of theft of services and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center without further incident.
