Job service system hack allows jobseekers to be targeted in scam
Lawrenceburg Now
A computer system hack at a job service agency has allowed scam artists to target a number of jobseekers.
One of the victims, a forty-six year old Lawrenceburg resident, filed a complaint with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department Friday after becoming suspicious about instructions she had received from a "potential employer".
The victim said that she had sought employment through the agency, which had included revealing personal information such as her name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and even the name of her bank. Afterwards, she said she was contacted through "Google Hangout" regarding a job with Onyx Contractors Operations, LP.
The victim received a check bearing the company's name and instructions, telling her to deposit the check into her bank account and use the funds to purchase office supplies to begin her job at home. Once she had done so, she was instructed to fax the company a statement, showing her purchases.
The victim told deputies that the instructions "threw up a red flag", so she contacted her bank to have them verify the check's legitimacy. They found that the check was legitimate, but advised her to contact business officials to find out more.
The victim spoke with company officials who told her that the check had been fraudulently generated. They told her that their computer system had been hacked and that she should not deposit it. They said that they had received several calls from individuals who had received similar letters and checks.
The case currently remains under investigation both through the sheriff's department and through the company itself.
