Loretto, Lawrenceburg Facing Similar Codes Issues
Loretto leaders are working to resolve some codes violation issues; the same issues that City of Lawrenceburg officials are working to rectify.
During a meeting of the Loretto Board of Aldermen Tuesday evening members discussed violations at around fifteen different properties situated inside the city limits, the majority of which have to do with the owners not maintaining grass to codes-imposed regulations.
A Lawrenceburg resident had addressed the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council just a week prior about the same issue. He requested that the board enforce city ordinances regarding the lack of grass maintenance, an on-going problem with which he said he had been dealing for the past few years. He told council members that the owner of adjacent properties refused to keep the grass cut. He said that, in addition to being an eyesore, the situation causes an increase in vermin activity. At the present, Lawrenceburg leaders are looking into making some minor changes to city ordinances that would allow for better enforcement.
During Tuesday’s discussion Loretto City Attorney Chuck Doerflinger explained that enforcement of city codes would fall on the shoulders of the city’s codes enforcement officer; likely Police Chief Bobby Joe Killen.
Although the city can take control, clean up properties and then bill the property owner for services rendered, Doerflinger said, “I prefer to give the property owners notice and have them do it at their expense rather than at our expense…But we can take them into city court for violation of municipal codes.”
Alderman Steve McMasters said that he believed the board should take this opportunity to scrutinize all of the city codes and determine whether other changes might be prudent.
