Officers arrest driver for leaving accident scene
Lawrenceburg Now
A teenager was arrested on Monday after she allegedly fled from the scene of a traffic accident.
Lawrenceburg Police officers responded to the Buffalo/Crescent Factory Road intersection around 12:30 p.m. regarding a hit and run vehicle accident. They found that a Ford Focus that was sitting on the northbound shoulder of the roadway had sustained considerable damage on the driver’s side.
Witnesses reported seeing the driver of a red car run the stop sign as she pulled from Crescent Factory onto Buffalo Road, strike the vehicle, then flee from the scene. They were able to provide officers with the location of the vehicle in question, which was parked at B&K Apartments on Mahr Avenue. One of the witnesses told officers that she was familiar with the driver’s identity. Witnesses also said that as she fled, they saw the driver throw something into the ditch.
When they spoke with the suspect about the matter, they report that she confessed to the crime. She told them that the car was still registered in the previous owner’s name and that she had no valid insurance. She also admitted that she had thrown a soft drink bottle into the ditch while fleeing.
The woman, eighteen year old Mary Kamelia Wayne of 20 Cardinal Court, was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident. She was issued citations on charges of driving an unregistered vehicle, failure to exercise due care, failure to provide proof of insurance, driving on a suspended license, and littering. She was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where she was held under a bond of $1,000.
Wayne has been scheduled an initial appearance in General Sessions Court on June 2, 2016.
