Amish buggy, eighteen wheeler involved in Tuesday crash
Motorists urged to avoid distractions while driving
Lawrenceburg Now
None of the individuals associated with a Tuesday afternoon crash involving an Amish buggy and eighteen wheeler, sustained what was believed to be life-threatening injuries.
The crash occurred after 3:00 p.m. on Highway 43 North, in the vicinity of Farm Credit Services. Lieutenant Jeremy Methvin of the Lawrenceburg Police Department reports that eighteen year old Steven Steele was traveling northbound in the outside lane when he noticed a lawnmower and looked away for a few seconds.
When he looked back he found that he was extremely close to an Amish buggy. He hit his brakes and attempted to avoid a collision, however he did strike the buggy.
Steele's vehicle spun around and he crossed the highway, striking an eighteen wheeler in the outside southbound lane. Before his vehicle came to rest, Methvin said it was struck by an individual driving a Hyundai in the inside southbound lane.
Methvin said that the buggy driver, Mary Gingrich, sustained several minor scrapes and bruises. She was transported to Southern Tennessee Health Systems for medical care. Steele did sustain some injuries, including possibly a broken neck, but was in stable condition when transported for medical attention. "All of them were in stable condition," Methvin said.
As far as the horse, Methvin said it sustained a gash on one leg in the crash. He said that the horse fled from the scene, running toward nearby Northside Animal Clinic. He was treated on-site and is, also, expected to make a full recovery.
Methvin urges motorists to try to remain focused when driving. "Phones aren't the only distraction when you're driving," he pointed out. Looking away from the roadway even for a few seconds, he said, can easily result in tragedy.
