Local woman’s identity fraudulently used to obtain unemployment benefits

Lawrenceburg Now

A Lawrenceburg woman requested that authorities investigate after learning that someone had used her identity in order to fraudulently obtain unemployment benefits.

The victim, age 42, filed a report with Lawrenceburg Police officers on Friday, indicating that she was made aware of the matter by a letter sent from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The letter notified her that her identity had possibly been fraudulently used in that manner.

The victim reported that an unknown person had used her previous name along with her date of birth and Social Security number in the scam. Authorities confirmed that they had already paid weekly benefits to the scammer, but the victim had no idea the total amount of benefits paid.

The matter currently remains under investigation.
