Man caught concealing shoplifted items in pants
Lawrenceburg Now
A local man was charged last week when he was caught in the act of concealing shoplifted merchandise in his pants.
The incident occurred at Cash Savers, located at 818 North Locust Avenue in Lawrenceburg. Police officers were dispatched to the business at the request of employees who reported they had witnessed the crime.
They told officers that they had watched as fifty-two year old Stephen Andrew Ayers, of 2000 Massey Avenue, concealed a pack of steaks in his pants. They said that he left the store without paying, and that they caught up with him in the parking lot.
According to employee statements, Ayers was confronted near his vehicle. They said that he attempted to toss the meat into his vehicle, but was stopped.
When officers confronted Ayers, they report that he had little to say. They noticed a strong odor of alcohol about his person and asked permission to look inside his vehicle. When he gave consent, they report finding an open container of beer in a cup holder in plain view. Ayers admitted that the beer belonged to him.
As a result of the incident, Ayers was issued citations charging him with the crimes of shoplifting and violation of the open container law. He will be required to answer the charges in Lawrence County General Sessions Court.
