Man left holding the bag when he helps “friend” cash her check
Lawrenceburg Now
A local man discovered that he had been left holding the bag after he helped an acquaintance get her check cashed at his bank recently.
Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were called upon to investigate after the crime was discovered. Officials with the Bank of Frankewing reported that a woman had attempted to cash a check at the bank, but did not have an account with them. The check had been written to her by her mother in the amount of $6,500 for “lawn account for mower.” Employees said the check had been written from an account at another bank, and that neither woman had an account with them, therefore they refused to cash it.
Afterwards, bank employees said that the woman returned in the company of a man who did have an account at that bank. They said that he vouched for the woman and endorsed the check along with her. The check was cashed and employees warned them that the funds could not be accessed for two business days. They said the man returned two days later to obtain the cash.
Around ten minutes after the man left the bank premises, employees said they received notification that “the check would be returned for insufficient funds.” However, by the time they were able to notify the man, he said he had already delivered the cash to the woman.
Reports indicate that when contacted by the victim, the woman agreed to return the money “minus $500 used for a car payment.” The victim told officers that she never brought the money back to him. He said that she will no longer return his calls, and that he has no way to repay the funds.
Employees told officers that they had since spoken with both the woman and her mother. They said that both women “knew the check was no good and would be returned for insufficient funds.”
Bank officials said that they are willing to seek prosecution against the two women.
