Dog Park Grand Opening is Thursday
The Mitzi Sweet Memorial Dog Park, the first of its kind in the area, will open Thursday. A Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting will be held Thursday, May 12 at at 10 a.m. at the Lawrenceburg Animal Shelter.
The park is named for shelter supporter Mitzi Sweet who helped to fund facility improvements at the Lawrenceburg Animal Shelter. The dog park is adjacent to the shelter that is located off Skyline Drive.
The park offers two large chain link enclosures where people can enjoy some off-leash outdoor time with their dogs. One enclosure is for small-size dogs and the other for medium to large size dogs. Each enclosure offers a covered picnic area, waste receptacles and a water source for the dogs.
The park will be open from daylight until one-half hour before dark, seven days a week. Dogs must be wearing current rabies and identification tags at all times. Aggressive dogs, puppies under the age of four months, and female dogs in heat, are not permitted at the park. No dog food or glass containers are allowed and the park and shelter grounds are no smoking areas. The vending or the selling/giving away of animals is prohibited without written permission of the city of Lawrenceburg.
In addition to the off-leash play areas, the park offers a one-quarter mile walking trail through the woods and a bird-feeding area with benches. The park was made possible by private donations and fundraisers.
“Mitzi and I had talked about a dog park,” said Segraves. “Dogs are happy when they get exercise and playtime and the park is something we both wanted to do very much. I started one in Florida before coming to Lawrenceburg and it was great. I just invite everyone out to take part in our grand opening, enjoy the park and visit our animal shelter.”
