LCHS Was Feeling Great In The Empire State
The Lawrence County High School Virtual Enterprise firm, Alpha & Omega, visited New York City for the Virtual Enterprise International Trade Fair. The VE International Trade Fair was busier than ever this year, with over 170 firms in attendance from Tennessee, California, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia being represented. Students from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Germany, Indonesia, and Romania were also in attendance.
LCHS students had the wonderful experience of networking with these students in order to complete their sales transactions. In addition to pursuing customers, they had the interesting opportunity to buy products from many of the firms in attendance.
The LCHS students were on tight schedule after landing in New York. They quickly grabbed lunch and headed straight to the 69th Regiment Armory to set up their booth for business the next day. The students spent much time in planning the look for this year’s booth and creating sales promotions.
While at trade fair, the students did an excellent job of marketing and selling their products to the other firms. They utilized social media outlets such as Twitter and Snapchat to promote their firm and increase sales.
The students were rewarded for their efforts by receiving the following rewards at the international level of competition: Top 10% - Video Commercial, Honorable Mention – Website Design. Congratulations to these students on a job well done!
After all the hard work was complete, the LCHS group enjoyed many of the exciting sites that New York City has to offer. After a tiring day at Trade Fair, the group traveled to the Bronx to take in the Yankees vs. Oakland A’s Game.
The next day they arose early to gain a spot on The Today Show which gave the students an opportunity to be seen on television by family and loved ones back home. They also had the opportunity to meet the hosts of the show and Dr. Oz.
The group toured the NBC Studio, where they were able to see firsthand were shows such as Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live are recorded. They learned the ins and outs of the television industry and were even given the opportunity to film their own show! After leaving the tour, members of the group were able to be filmed alongside Today Show host, Hoda Kotb in a show spotlight.
A Broadway show is always a must when visiting New York and this year’s group enjoyed the ever popular play Wicked. The strong vocals, beautiful sets and effects made this production one to remember.
Other sites visited by the group included the exciting Times Square area, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, Central Park, Tiffany’s, Macy’s, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station and Trump Tower. Members of the group also toured the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chelsea Market and the beautiful High Line area.
Before visiting New York the students worked in groups to prepare presentations over various landmarks in the area so that they were familiar with the meaning before they arrive. This is especially important for the lower Manhattan area. This year’s group of students were in the three to four age range when the 9/11 attacks occurred.
As the students tour the 9/11 Memorial and Museum they are able to see and hear many touching memories of that day. There are no words to describe all the artifacts that are housed inside and many hours were spent learning and remembering the events of that day.
The group also toured St. Paul’s Chapel and the Survivor Tree. On the day that the group visited this area Poland Prime Minister Szydlo was also in attendance. She placed white roses beside all the Polish victims’ names on the Twin Towers Memorial Pools. The whole time spent in this area was very humbling for the group.
The newly opened One World Observatory provided breathtaking views of the city and surrounding states, and was a group favorite. A visit to the Financial District allowed the students to see the historic Bull of Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange.
Dining is always a treat for all and this year’s choices included a Junior’s, John’s Pizzeria, Georgio’s Country Grill, dessert and entertainment at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, and a slice of pizza from Famous Amadeus Pizza.
Traveling to New York this year were students Meghan Baker, John Calvin Bryant, Juliana Campbell, Bryce Clifft, Alan Fraley, Taylor Gilbert, Jordan Haney, Dawson James, Seth Kelso, Francesca Lay, Madison Mayer, Dru Peppers, Lydia Runions, Brianna Snider, Chloe Townsend, Jessi Whitehead, along with their Virtual Enterprise Instructor, Hope McDow. Also attending were chaperones LCHS Teacher Alanna Harris, LCHS Guidance Counselor Sarah Waller, and parents Calvin and Jonna Bryant, Tammy Campbell, Tina Clifft, Erica Haney, Teresa Runions, and Kristy Whitehead.
The LCHS Virtual Enterprise students and instructor would like to give thanks to members of the community and local businesses for the support given to them this year. Whether it was a donation, participating in fundraisers, providing a sponsorship, or giving advice when needed, it meant the world to this group! We would like to give a whole hearted thank you for making this incredible experience possible for Alpha and Omega!
